While its association with obesity and chronic diseases is well-documented, the impact of sugar on the healing process during illness is a topic of growing interest. High sugar consumption can contribute to an acidic environment in the body. This can disrupt the balance of pH levels, potentially impairing cellular function and delaying healing. Sugar consumption plays a significant role in dental caries (tooth decay) and gum disease. Acid-producing bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars, producing acids that can erode tooth enamel and damage gum tissues. Poor oral health can hinder the healing of oral wounds and infections.
While sugar is often seen as a harmless indulgence, its impact on the healing process from diseases should not be underestimated.
