“The incidence of heart attacks is on the rise, especially amidst the youth. It is often perceived that there is a direct connection of heart attacks to exercising or going to the gym, which is a myth. In reality, this rise is attributed to inaccurate / faulty or lack of blood pressure monitoring. Uncontrolled blood pressure being the major cause of heart attacks and strokes, is seldom subjected to precautionary measures. Only a small percentage of the population monitors blood pressure regularly and accurately, thereby leaving the larger population at a risk of strokes and heart diseases. To prevent unpredictable and life-threatening health events, it is crucial for individuals to accurately monitor their blood pressure regularly and take the necessary precautions.

“People underestimate most health disorders because of grossly ignoring or neglecting some tell tale signs. Akin to tip of the iceberg some dreaded diseases and disorders have seemingly innocuous signs and symptoms. ‘Gas’, ‘acidity’ and chest discomfort may be signs of a heart attack. Most people underrate the severity in such cases and it may not be the facade of acid peptic disease like they perceive but in fact be a myocardial infarction. Especially those people with risk factors such as tobacco use, and or have diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia should not ignore such signs and get immediate help in the form of getting evaluated for heart disease.

Sometimes only tests such as Treadmill test and or CT coronary angiogram can unmask an early coronary artery disease Weakness and or numbness of limbs in one half of the body including face, drooping of the angle of mouth, sudden trouble speaking or comprehending, sudden onset of confusion, giddiness, inability to walk, lack of coordination, sudden decrease in eyesight may all be signs of an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke in the brain which requires immediate attention and work-up and management. Losing weight unintentionally (cachexia) and or increased urination, increased hunger may be tell-tale signs of high sugars and uncontrolled diabetes. Although the lack of the above doesn’t rule out the presence of diabetes one must get annual health checks done that unmask early diabetes. Various cancers, tuberculosis, autoimmune diseases also present with unintentional weight loss and hence a high index of suspicion needs to be present in the minds of treating clinician teams. Xanthelasmas which are light coloured skin tags may be signs of underlying dyslipidemia and one needs work up for the same.”
